There are too many "GOTCHAS" in this industry. But it doesn't have to be this way.
Hi, I'm Ashley Rowland and I'm co-owner of Adaptiv Advisors (a technology advisory firm) and Recurring Raise (an online education platform). My husband and I founded Adaptiv just before the pandemic hit and at the same time, our nanny left us. Without any childcare options, we found ourselves full-time parenting, while trying to grow Adaptiv. Ryan also still held down a W-2 while we built our revenue. The clock was ticking for us and the options were either: 1) focus on getting customers and build our revenue fast or 2) go back to corporate jobs.
We chose option 1 but it wasn't a cake walk. We made so many mistakes and found ourselves growing slower than we mapped out. I started connecting with other agents for advice and discovered that a lot of us made many of the same mistakes.
What kind of mistakes?
-Meeting with every vendor that wanted to teach me about their solutions (thinking I needed to be the expert on EVERYTHING)
-Trying to grow the company with sub-agents before I had my own base built up
-Not knowing about my TSB options or finding the right fit for my style of business.
And so many more!
Technology Solutions Brokerages (TSBs) or master agencies are a critical piece of the ecosystem and you need them. But they shouldn't be the ones to teach you how this industry works because, well, they get a piece of your sales and are financially incentivized by providers to deliver your attention or performance (it's called a "volume bonus"). Why do you think they invite you to so many vendor presentations? (queue the cash register sound effect). Then there's the vendors or service providers... love them... they pay us, but they are competing hard for your mindshare and sometimes they flash shiny objects (literally) in front of your face when they should be delivering outstanding service to your customers. It can be difficult to figure out who is going to do what they say they are going to do for your customers (that's where the Technology Advisor Alliance comes in).
